A Practical Cloud Migration Guide for Small Businesses

Moving your business to the cloud is one of the most impactful technology decisions you can make — but it is also one that requires careful planning. Done well, cloud migration reduces costs, improves flexibility, and makes your team more productive. Done poorly, it causes disruption and unexpected expenses.

The first step is understanding what you actually need to migrate. Not every system or application needs to move to the cloud. Start by auditing your current infrastructure: what are you running, where is it hosted, and what are the dependencies between systems?

Once you have a clear picture, prioritise based on business impact and complexity. Low-risk, high-value migrations — such as moving email to Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace — are good starting points. More complex migrations, like moving a custom database application, require more planning.

Choose your cloud provider based on your specific needs. AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud all offer strong options for SMEs, with different pricing models and strengths. For most small businesses in Rwanda, a hybrid approach — keeping some systems on-premise while moving others to the cloud — is the most practical path.

Finally, do not underestimate the importance of staff training and change management. The best cloud setup in the world will not deliver value if your team does not know how to use it effectively.
